Interior Design Info

Interior design refers not only to the process of creating a visual space, but also to the person doing the creating.  Interior design includes arranging physical space through color, scale, style and type of furnishings and through use of fabrics and other materials.  Not to be confused with interior decorating, interior design info includes the impact on the environment, architecture types, health and safety issues, along with building permit and licensing requirements. 

An interior designer is a considered a professional with knowledge of all aspects of interior design information.  A designer needs to understand style, color, and structure and how they interact to create a visual space.  The designer must also understand time management, be able to work with deadlines and within budgets.  In addition, a design professional has to understand structural parameters, health and safety requirements, and the details involved in building licensing and permits. 

Interior design info includes the educational requirements for becoming a designer.  According to industry leaders, attending a CIDA, Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly the Foundation for Interior Design Education and Research FIDER) accredited school is the easiest way to land a job.  Because interior design includes the construction of buildings, it falls under the jurisdiction of the individual state governments, some of who require specific certification.  Some states require attendance to a CIDA accredited school and National Council for Interior Design Qualification certification.  Others only require the NCIDQ certification.

In the United States, many universities and colleges offer four year bachelor’s degrees in interior design.  Some design colleges also offer interior design info as stand-alone program.  Master degrees are also available, although this advanced degree is less common than the bachelor’s degree.  Instead, many professionals pursue advanced degrees in related subjects, such as industrial design, fine art or education.

Interior design info and education can also be obtained outside of the traditional, studio-based instruction, by partaking in online degree programs.  The online degree programs, like the ones offered in traditional form, feature a comprehensive curriculum under offerings that range from 60-credit diploma courses to certificate programs, and to as many as 132 credits for a bachelor’s degree program.

Because of the diversity of interior design information offered in the industry, designers can specialize.  Professionals can specialize in residential or commercial design, and go further to develop specific expertise in health care or institutional design.  In areas where government regulates the designers, the professional must display competence across the general scope of interior design, not just in a specialty.  Private organizations offer specialist certification if desired, and experts in environmental design can receive accreditation by taking the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) exam.

Just as interior design information is varied, so are the opportunities for employment.  Once degreed and/or certified, a designer can work in design departments of large architectural firms and institutions, or be connected with residential or commercial construction.  Individual design firms hire professionals as associates and assistants, plus an interior designer can own and operate his/her own business, and/or freelance.
